Removal of cracked iron downpipe and replacement. Very happy with the work undertaken - before David arrived the area that the pipe was in and surrounding drains was in a poor state. Following the work it's completely transformed. Not only was new case iron pipe installed but existing loose drain covers fixed in place, and loose tap fixed to wall.

Alan and his brothers work has been exceptional. They are very professional, trustworthy and great value for the quality of their work. Alan helped me get the project off the ground in every way - from discussing the pros and cons to my ideas, ensuring that I had East Lothian Council permission, coming up with cost effective plans when small hiccups occurred, as well as answering my numerous emails/ texts along the way quickly and calmly. I had non-structural work done - the knocking down of two walls, installation of bi-fold doors, new ceiling in dining room and hall, installation of vestibule.

Full refurbishment of wooden front door.

We have used David for a number of jobs in our property including roof and guttering repairs. We have always found him entirely fair, trustworthy and reliable.
On this occasion he removed and renovated our old and tired large wooden front door, repaired and refurbished it and added new ironmongery and draught proofing. It has made the door far more secure and insulating and it now looks great. I will have no hesitation in using David and W H Kay again in the future.

We had an unsafe step at the back of our house, and some damage between the bottom of the door and the top of the step caused by a previous door fitter (not W.H. Kay). The step height was also uneven. David explained the problem clearly, and provided a very reasonable quote which we accepted. As it was a small job, the work was able to be fitted into an afternoon very soon after we accepted the quote. The job was completed quickly efficiently and to a high standard with no mess. David and the tradesman who worked with him were very polite and were happy to answer any questions we had. Removing all leaves and debris from gutters, brush moss off small roof at front of house, repair down pipe at side of house, remove old seats and metal tresils at side of house and seal concrete round windows with acrylic sealant.
They also noticed and made repairs to the gutter by supplying and fitting 2 stop ends and a new bit of gutter, screwed a plastic verge cap on the small roof to hold in place and stop the wind blowing it off.

The repair of the guttering in two places required the building then dismantling and rebuilding of a tall scaffold. This was very efficiently done. The second location required the purchase of additional materials which did not affect the overall progress of the work. Good quality new cast iron guttering was provided.

Alan kept us up to date with the planning and progress of the work.

I contacted W H Kay when we experienced water ingress to a first floor dormer window in our 1940s semi detached. David responded quickly and unlike others, checked the roof immediately instead of doing it from the ground. He removed a couple of tiles and discovered the problem, returned to ground level for some supplies and fixed the issue there and then. I then asked him to check some guttering and he completed a really good temporary fix ahead of returning after Xmas to replace two lengths of guttering. I’d asked him to also check a corner joint and rather than charge for another length, he used the removed damaged section to manufacture a replacement corner joint on site. Excellent communication and immediately generated a sense of trust. He’s going into the contact book as my first call in the event of any future repair work on the house!

Garage roof needed replaced after 35 years. David advised on best type to get and sent us a quote which we accepted. Aim was a non-maintenance roof to avoid future painting. David and Alan carried out this task over several days in December 2019. All existing roof, timber facia and gutters were removed and a couple of new roof beams installed to replace rotten ones. Three layers of felt were laid on new roof deck as well as uPVC fascia around roof and new guttering. New garage door was also ordered to complete project. Delighted with finished job. David and Alan arrived when they said they would and cracked on with the work. Would certainly recommend.

W.H. Kay installed a bifold door and two patio doors at our property in September 2019. The work was structural and was carried out in accordance with plans from both the architect and structural engineer. From my experience with W.H. Kay on this job I cannot recommend them highly enough. I first spoke to Alan 4 months before work began. He came round, asessed the job, answered all my questions and then emailed me a quote. He gave me a date on which work would commence (which turned out 4 months later to be the very day upon which he arrived to start work). In that 4 month period we must have exchanged around 20 emails - Alan was always quick to respond with answers to queries/slight changes to plans etc. - most times I would receive a response on the same day. Alan and his brother arrived on the Monday morning to start work and were there for a week - all day, every day. As the job went on they would give me options as to how I wanted things done rather than just pick the one that was easiest - I wanted the threshold of the doors to be close to floor level rather than a step up which meant cutting into the concrete cill at the bottom of the house. They just said no problem, fired up the stihl saw and got on with it. The end product is stunning, solid as a rock - just a great job all round. Both Alan and David are friendly, approachable, hard working and best of all they seem to really care about the job they are doing. I've had experiences (like most people) with builders in the past ranging from ok to down right crooks - W.H. Kay are by far the best builders I've ever had the pleasure to deal with. If you need work done and are lucky enough that they have space in their schedule - hire these guys!

We had a blocked down-pipe on a double-height building. The blockage caused cascades of water on to the walls during heavy rainfall.
Mr Kay attended despite having a heavy workload and worked hard to clear the blockage but was unable to do so on the first visit. He returned within days and spent a considerable time on the job which eventually required the removal and replacement of some cast-iron piping.
I would have no hesitation in recommending the firm of W H Kay.

Alan and David have now done three pieces of work for us. The latest was the removal of an old garage which had an asbestos roof. Alan arranged all the necessary with the third party contractors who were removing the roof. As always he was great at communicating with us too, ensuring that we knew exactly what was happening, when and what was needed. Alan and David took the block work down and as always left the site spotless. This pair have an eye for detail, they are great craftsmen and totally trustworthy and reliable.

General repairs on roof and particularly to counteract water penetration in bedroom. Problem seemed to be solved but we still had some water penetration and Kay’s we’re back within hours to assess the situation and a few days later made time to get to the root of the problem and fix it.

Alan Kay and his team were a pleasure to deal with from the initial quote to completing the replacement porch. Nothing was too much trouble and the site was kept tidy after each days work.

David built a shelved cupboard into an alcove as well as quoting for replacement windows. The result of the work is excellent quality and exactly what was hoped for. He is extremely friendly and helpful, and his response time to requesting a quote and to carrying out the work was very fast. We accepted the quote for replacement windows and our experience with this job means we have complete faith in David and his work.

This was a relatively large job involving considerable internal alterations to our cottage (new partitions and doorways, converting a lounge to a kitchen, installing a new showroom, creating a new bedroom, moving a fire place, building up an external doorway). David, Alan and Andrew are a friendly, conscientious and hard-working team and have done an excellent job finished to a very high standard. It has totally transformed our house. Communication throughout the build was excellent and the costing was very transparent (i.e. no big surprises at the end!). I would thoroughly recommend them and would certainly use again.

I have had Alan to come to my property to do two similar jobs. He replaced concrete sills. On both occasions Alan arrived when he said he would and worked hard to complete the jobs. The first sill was in an extremely bad state and when he came to assess the job he removed dangerous parts of the sill and sealed it without payment or any guarantee of getting the job. Found him to be very reliable and would definitely use him in the future.

Alan and his colleagues fitted a sun tunnel to illuminate an internal bathroom. They did an excellent, professional job and I wouldn't hesitate to use them again and to recommend them to others.
