Deckin' Design

Norman has done lots of work for us over the years since we first met him, back in 2007. At that point time he built a 40 sq mtr raised deck (boxed in underneath with access doors) and 3 varying sets of stairs. He also built a plain sawn timber 6 mtr long fence at the same time.

Since then he has also completed the following work for us -
- Various repair/ reconfigurations to stairs.
- Built a replacement 6 mtr long loglap fence.
- Built two long narrow raised beds, with two removable box troughs. A lift-off plank beneath one of the troughs makes use of the space underneath to store pots and some garden tools over the winter. This was partially built using the good wood from the old fence.
- Built a frame to hold an imitation hedge to replace an old area of hedge.
- Repairs to posts and decking boards that were showing signs of age.

A few months ago Norman laid us beautiful new replacement decking. The old timber deck was always a real labour of love to clean and paint every year, so we decided to give ourselves a bit less work and more time to enjoy sitting out on it. The new composite timber one was built using the existing foundation timbers, since these were mainly all still in perfect condition. Minor repairs were completed as necessary before Norman fitted the new deck.

We took the opportunity to redesign the railings, now made of timber and steel, and made the steps deeper. We slightly changed the boxed in area and Norman repurposed some of the perfectly good old decking timber for this part of the job. Norman even took time to repair my big wooden garden chair that had broken at the arm rest.

Norman builds everything from scratch. None of it is made from a kit, unless of course you were to provide this for him to build up for you, such as a tool shed. If you can think of something involving wood that you need done outdoors just run it by him.

It is up to you to come up with your ideas for your project, but Norman will work with you and help you. He'll advise you as to what will work best or can be achieved with your budget, best materials to use, cheaper options and their limitations, etc.

Norman is old school. He takes a real pride in producing the best result and pays great attention to making sure he understands what his customers are after.

Norman was ably assisted on some days by Ian, who is also very competent at his tasks. The two of them together make a good team, working away methodically and proficiently to complete your job to the highest standards of workmanship.

Fence repair.
As always Norman turned up on time and complete the work with in the agreed time scale and cleaned up when the work was completed.
Would definitely use Norman again and would recommend him to others requiring fence-or decking work.

Building of new decking area at uneven lower garden area.
Great job by Norman who when quoting for the work gave a concise description of how he planned to carry out the works and in turn executed them the same.
He worked in some horrible weather conditions but never missed a day as he set up a canopy in the garden and was properly equipped for the elements.
I would advise anyone who is thinking of decking to have a look at his website and you will see where he differs from other contractors with his attention to detail.
The subframe was impeccably prepared above concrete pad foundations ensuring the framework was clear of ground moisture. The framework was screwed together and all cut ends were treated to prolong the lifespan of the deck.
The deck boards were finished with a lovely border and an angle and all attached using a concealed screw system.
We have someone in the household with mobility issues but this has been somewhat alleviated by being able to step out to an even surface from the doorway.
Great communication from Norman from quoting to carrying out the works and also a very nice person.
If we were to undertake any similar works he would be the only person we would call.

After being blown over in the storms of last winter, we finally got hold of Norman to rebuild it as a hit and miss fence, to reduce any wind damage in the future.
Norman put forward ideas on design, erection, and post-erection landscaping, and did a fantastic job, at a reasonable price to achieve the result.
Furthermore he completed this project in the most awful weather, when most tradesman would have not turned up.
I am more than pleased with the result, and look forward to having Norman back for some decking repairs next year!

Norman provided decking on two levels with a connecting stair. Norman was knowledgeable and professional; all the work was completed to a high standard and on time. We are very happy with the end product.

Replacement of balcony railing around existing decking which was rotten in places, and falling down. Norman assessed what would be required and advised on how he would do the repair. The wood he uses is of a much better quality than there before, the design and finish is great, all now completed, clean up done and all "rubbish" removed, I am absolutely delighted with the end product and would not hesitate in recommending Deckin Design, reasonable price, high quality work, excellent.... can't wait to show it off! Have already asked him to see if he can replace steps which have never been great.... hope he has time

Large area of garden transformed with raised decking. Took about a week to complete all foundations, decking and sealing. Incorporated a water feature within the decking area and angled boards with concealed nailing.

Norman was worth wait. Covid demands had impacted on his time scale, but he was as good as his word and his work is excellent. He was on time every day went over the plans for the decking area, and communicated plans for each stage every day.

Repair to handrails of decking installed by Deckin’ Design about 15 years ago. This was to address one very small piece of wet rot on one handrail, which is less than expected for the area of decking we have. Norman installed our decking about 15 years ago and a few years back, I stripped it back to bare wood and oiled it. It now gets an annual light pressure wash and oiled. Still looks great. Would highly recommend this company if you want solid quality decking that will last for many years.
