The Cupar family firm keeping Fife switched on, from one generation to the next

I have been involved in the electrical industry for over 35 years now, starting out with a local electrician and completing my apprenticeship after leaving school. In 2003 I set up on my own, and Craig Swinton Electrical has been serving homes across Fife and beyond ever since, covering every kind of domestic electrical work, from rewires, fuse boards and lighting through to underfloor heating, fire and smoke alarms, and electrical inspection and testing.

We are very much a local family business. Our son, Ben, is now a fully qualified electrician working alongside me in the company, my wife Nicola runs the office, and we currently have one other qualified electrician and two apprentices on the books, one of whom is due to qualify this year. Watching the trade being passed on within the business, exactly the way I learned it myself, is something I am genuinely proud of.

Why we joined Fife Trusted Trader

We joined the scheme back in 2011, which means this year we are celebrating 15 years as a Fife Trusted Trader. The reason we joined has never changed: we wanted to give customers complete confidence when choosing us for their electrical work, knowing we are Trading Standards vetted and that the scheme is backed by the council.

We are also members of industry specific electrical bodies such as SELECT and Scottish Building Standards, and while those memberships matter a great deal within the trade, the honest truth is that not many homeowners have heard of them. People have heard of Trusted Trader. It is a name they recognise and trust, and that recognition makes a real difference when someone is deciding who to let into their home.

What it means for our customers

For customers and potential customers, membership gives confidence in two ways. First, it is a recognised name, the scheme is backed by Fife Council and vetted by Trading Standards. Second, the reviews mean people can read what others who have used us think of our service before they ever pick up the phone, and because every review is verified, they know the feedback is genuine.

On our Fife Trusted Trader profile, we hold a 4.9 out of 5 rating from 80 verified reviews, with customers regularly mentioning the quality and tidiness of the work, the friendliness of the team, and Nicola's excellent communication from the office. We also get a lot of repeat business through the scheme, which to us is the best compliment a customer can give.

What Trading Standards check, and what they do not

Fife Trusted Trader is run in partnership with Fife Council Trading Standards. Before a business is accepted, Trading Standards check the business and the people who own it: complaints history, insurances, Companies House records, the disqualified directors register, advertising and terms of business.

What Trading Standards do not do is inspect anybody's workmanship. The council checks that the business is what it says it is and has behaved properly. The customers, in the reviews, say what the work was like.

Looking ahead

After 15 years on the scheme and more than two decades in business, what drives us is the same as it has always been, doing a proper job for local people, at a fair price, with the certificates and guarantees to back it up. With the next generation already qualified and our apprentices coming through, we plan to be keeping Fife switched on for many years to come.
