We chose White Elm after seeing them working on several projects in our neighbourhood and hearing positive feedback from a neighbour. At the outset, the company came across as professional, and we really liked the work we'd seen them do in the neighbourhood.
One positive note is Michael, co-owner, who was hardworking, respectful, and clearly committed to the job.
Our main concerns relate to project management and completion of works. Andy advised us not to use our architect and stated he would personally manage the project. In our experience, this did not happen, and the project lacked consistent oversight. Receipts that were promised were not provided, and coordination of works was often unclear.
After the final payment was made, a number of issues remained outstanding. Andy indicated these would be resolved; however, when we requested timelines, responses were vague and communication eventually ceased.
The issues we experienced included:
Flue relocation: This caused delays during construction. The wall was closed without required inspection hatches, which were later installed after completion, leaving large and visibly poor openings.
Roof: Leaks developed within months. Independent roofers subsequently identified glued slates and a drilled hole in the roof's valley.
Kitchen ceiling: Holes were left following first-floor works and were not repaired, despite being acknowledged.
Bathroom window: Left unsealed and not resolved.
Doors: Never cut to accommodate carpet installation.
Staircase: A significant squeak in the final step remained unresolved. This was later corrected by another contractor, who advised it had not been installed correctly.
Electrical: Electricians sent by the company identified an issue and proposed remedial work; however, an independent contractor later determined this diagnosis was incorrect and resolved the actual fault.
Completion certificate: Several required items for sign-off were left incomplete.
As these matters were not resolved, we engaged alternative contractors and incurred additional costs of several thousand pounds to complete and rectify the work in order to obtain our completion certificate. Given the total project cost of approximately £90k, this was particularly disappointing.
While we acknowledge Michael’s efforts, the lack of effective project management and the number of unresolved and remedial issues resulted in a stressful and costly experience.
Based on our experience, overall the work they did was high quality, however if you want to work with them just make sure everything is finished before final payment.

Would highly recommend Andy and the team! Great communication throughout the project. All finished to a really high standard. The team fully renovated and extended our home, we were making wheelchair accessible adaptations and they were great at working with us to adapting to our needs and making more custom options. The team were really tidy and our neighbours complimented how they were in the street. Could put our trust in them fully and would highly recommend!

A big shout to Andy White and his team (White Elm Joinery and Construction) for doing a fantastic job on our recent renovation.
We would highly recommend these guys.
Professional throughout with attention to detail, second to none!!
They are all perfectionist, even pointing out a little issue that we would never have noticed ourselves.
They are reliable and nothing is too much trouble.
We lived in our home during the (winter) renovation and I can honestly say they were so respectful and a delight to have around.
Thanks again for everything guys.

White Elm completed our home extension, consisting of an upstairs dormer conversion and a downstairs room extension.
From day one they were very professional and completed our building work to the highest standard.
Even though there were unavoidable delays due to changes made by us, we were very happy and felt we received good value for money.
We would definitely use them again and recommend them unreservedly.

Recently had a new extension built to the rear of our property . Straight from our 1st meeting the guys were very thorough on every level of communication. Good trustworthy tradesmen from exterior to interior and having a lot of extra work put in to original quote they managed to fit it into the build . I would highly recommend this company.

Andrew and Mike from White Elm Joinery have successfully delivered on multiple property renovations for us in the past 3 years. In construction it’s not uncommon to run into unforeseen problems but their ability to provide cost effective solutions and help out in any way makes them our go to contractor. Have honest tradesmen with integrity is hard to find but you can rely on their team to be upfront at all stages of the project. Communication is key and they helped us through discussion of topics such as specification and alterations of existing designs in order to obtain our completion certificate.

This was a complex attic conversion costing £68k excluding VAT, on a property with a roof already in poor condition. We strongly advised a full roof replacement at the outset, which the client declined. Despite this, we carried out extensive work at our own cost after installing eight Velux windows, doing everything possible within the agreed budget to ensure the structure was watertight. We spent thousands of pounds at our cost working closely with a roofer to address leaks in a roof that was over 50 years old.
Throughout the project, there were repeated requests for additional works outside the agreed scope. Nevertheless, we made every effort to accommodate these requests where possible.
To address the specific points raised:
- Flue hatches: These were fitted in accordance with building regulations, which is standard practice following the completion of walls.
- Roof issues: These were raised months after completion following severe weather, concerning a roof we had already advised required replacement.
- Kitchen ceiling: Repairs were completed by our team at no additional cost to the client.
- Bathroom sealing: This was noted as part of the normal snagging process.
- Doors: Doors were left with the correct 12mm clearance. Flooring was removed from our scope of work by the client, and changes to the doors were only requested later.
- Staircase: Minor movement can occur as new timber settles; we would have resolved this had we been granted further access to the property.
- Electrical: These issues were caused by unauthorized tampering during the project, including screws being driven through cables after hours. We repaired this damage at cost.
- Completion items: Several items requested for sign-off were outside the original agreed scope and were not accepted as variations.
We always aim to resolve any outstanding issues; however, communication from the client became limited after the project was completed. We stand by the quality of our work and the effort invested in this conversion, and we have the documentation and correspondence to support our position.
