Established in 1990. We provide inspection and survey services for owners of traditional buildings, which are generally defined as those built before 1919 and constructed with solid (not cavity) walls.
Surveys are carried out by an Associate Member of the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) who is also qualified in Conservation of Masonry. Clients will benefit from our in-depth knowledge of historic building materials and experience of traditional trade craft.
We operate drones to inspect difficult to access areas of a building. Drones offer an affordable and efficient means of building inspection avoiding the need to use cherry pickers or scaffolding. Our drones are flown by a Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) certified pilot.
We provide -
Inspection and condition assessment of stonemasonry.
Condition surveys of traditional buildings (typically those built pre-1919).
Inspection and photography of building fabric at high level (towers, roofs, gutters, chimneys etc) using drone technology.
We inspect and survey -
Houses and tenements
Churches and towers
Monuments and memorials
Our building inspections can help identify deterioration of building fabric and defects within individual construction elements before failure causes long term damage. If your building suffers from water penetration, we can investigate and recommend appropriate solutions. And if you need help sourcing suitable contractors and quotes, we also offer a bespoke project management service.
We are fully insured and health and safety compliant. Our location is ideal for undertaking works in central Scotland, but we are happy to consider projects elsewhere.

We had stone gate piers repaired and reseated following a collision with a reversing skip lorry. The gates were also repaired by Mr Lyndesay's choice of Blacksmith.
All the work was carried out timeously, and to the highest standard, at a very reasonable price.

The Stoneworks team re-built and pointed walls and chimneys, following professional consultations and friendly advice. They were there in all weathers and nothing was too much trouble. The end result looks terrific and should last for many years to come.

The work was carried out on a Church of Scotland Manse from 1897. Eroded chimney was taken down, materials set aside for reuse or replaced with new matching masonry. Wall head repaired and stack rebuilt. All access scaffolding and lifting equipment was provided satisfactorily. Gable was repointed where required.
CDM plan was prepared and agreed with the Church Property Convener. The works were completed to our complete satisfaction, to a high standard of finish, on time and within budget.

David and his team are a credit to their profession and maintain the upmost professionalism and integrity. From the outset I had trust and assurance in David's findings and recommendations. His detailed report was easy to understand and highlighted what needed done without any surprises or hidden costs. His team are time served with considerable experiance in restoring historical buildings. I watched in awe at the level of traditional skills his team possessed, their knowledge of stonework and the enjoyment they took from their finished product, they were really likeable. I had all walls on my semi detached victorian house raked and repointed, replacement stone to chimney stack, chimney pots removed and reset, front bay window columns/lintels repositioned (after historical movement), and inner walls rebuilt for new beams. Work completed in approx 1 month. Absolute first class and highly recommended!

David and his team at Stoneworks were very professional. An accurate quotation was provided as were a detailed time line 6 months in advance with various options included.
The work was carried out perfectly and within the the time frame allowed.
Each night the site was left tidy and we are very pleased with the result and would recommend him again and again.
Stoneworks were not cheap but were good value for money- reliable and very responsive when issues arose.

The Kirkmichael Trust have used David Lindsay and Stoneworks twice, once for carving two full size medieval ornate crosses to be exhibited in the nave and chancel at Kirkmichael in the Black Isle, and a second time for carving a full-size tablestone slab with inscription to replace a smashed tablestone slab in the kirkyard at Kirkmichael in the Black Isle. David was very reliable, honest, checked with us where there were any decisions to be made, delivered when he said he would deliver, thoroughly professional.
