Thirty nine years in the trade, seven of them teaching it

Derek White started his plumbing apprenticeship in Barrhead in 1987 and went to Langside College. Thirty nine years later he is still on the tools, still in the same part of Glasgow, and for seven of those years he was also standing at the front of a college classroom teaching plumbing, heating and gas to the next lot of apprentices.

He did that part time, alongside running the business, as a way to pass on what he had learned and to give something back to a trade that had given him a living. He still runs lead roofing workshops for local roofing firms whose people want to upskill, which is not a common thing for a one man business to be doing on a Saturday.

D W Plumbing & Heating has been trading since 2006, working across Glasgow's south side and the surrounding area from a base in Newton Mearns. The work covers all general plumbing, gas central heating installations, boiler upgrades, servicing and maintenance, electric wet central heating, and the leadwork that most plumbers do not touch.

The leadwork almost nobody else offers

Early in his career Derek worked for one of Scotland's best known lead roofing companies, and leadwork has stayed part of the business ever since. Flashings, valleys and lead roofing are a separate discipline from plumbing, learned by doing and increasingly rare, which is why other roofing firms send their people to him rather than the other way round.

It matters to a householder more than it sounds. Lead is what stops water getting in where a roof meets a chimney, a wall or a dormer, and it is the first thing to fail on an older Glasgow property. A plumber who can also do the leadwork is a shorter list of phone calls and one trade to hold responsible.

The rest of the week is boilers and heating, held to the same standard: pipework run square, labelled and accessible, so that whoever comes to service it in ten years can see what was done and why.

A poster in a hardware shop

Derek joined the scheme for an unglamorous reason. He saw the poster in a local hardware shop and liked the idea of working under something people already recognised. There are too many rogue trader horror stories about, and he wanted to be part of something recognised that would increase his visibility and generate business built on trust and confidence.

Vetted, and the reviews vetted with him

He found the application clear and the person he dealt with helpful. The rest of it took him by surprise: every customer who had left him a review was contacted and their review checked. For someone not really up on social media, that was quite overwhelming at the start.

It is also the part he now rates most highly. Once the initial worry had eased, the rigour became the satisfying part, because future customers know the reviews and the checks are genuine.

That is worth being precise about. East Renfrewshire Trusted Trader is run in partnership with East Renfrewshire Council Trading Standards. Before a business is accepted, Trading Standards check the business and the people behind it: complaints history, insurances, Companies House records, the disqualified directors register, advertising and terms of business, the authenticity of the reviews, and a face to face interview. What they do not do is inspect anybody's workmanship. The council checks that the business is what it says it is. The customers, in the reviews, say what the work was like.

Visible without being on social media

Plenty of trades now live or die by their social feeds. Derek does not have one to speak of, and the scheme has become his visibility instead. Membership has brought a number of opportunities and jobs directly, and he has noticed a particular pattern in who finds him: people searching on behalf of a family member rather than for themselves.

Somebody arranging a boiler for an elderly parent is not looking for the cheapest quote. They are looking for a name that has been checked by somebody other than the tradesman himself.

He does his share of the work too. The membership is on his website and on every email he sends, and the sticker is on the van, which is how most people in Newton Mearns will see it first.

An actual person, not a robot

In three years Derek has never had an issue with the scheme team. They send out the information and offer a few different ways of collecting reviews. “The team are very helpful and always great to speak to an actual person not a robot.”

Grow, and stay the local one

The plan for the business is to keep growing and expanding while staying focused on a reputation for being trusted and community focused. From a man who spent seven years teaching apprentices and still runs workshops for other firms, that reads less like a business plan and more like a description of how he has always worked.
