Max has converted our old open vent system boiler to a combi boiler, and connected the Hive smart controller, he had to change the gas pipe because the existing one was too small.
He removed old water tanks from the attic. The work went smoothly and without any problems. I will be happy to recommend his services to my family and friends!

Great job! The works involved removal of old shower tray and then fitting a new shower tray and tiling. This was a tricky job as it involved rectifying another bathroom fitter’s bad install which had failed after only a couple of months. It was very difficult to find fitters to take on this job. Indeed I contacted 8 firms and only 2 provided a quote.

The fitter, Peter, clearly takes a pride in his work, and I really appreciate that he is approachable and took time to explain what he was doing.

I was impressed with Max when he initially visited to survey the job. He took time to work out exactly what would be involved, as well as taking precise measurements for the tray which would have to be made-to-measure.

I am delighted with the work carried out. The finish is great - it is almost impossible to tell that the shower tray wasn’t fitted at the same time as the rest of the bathroom. I would definitely recommend Max and his team at A1 for your bathroom refurbishment.

Max and his team carried out a complete new bathroom and kitchen renovation in our Newtown flat in the autumn of 2021. We were exceptionally impressed with the quality of the work - they achieved a great finish, provided excellent solutions to trickier aspects of the renovations and were always a pleasure to work with. Complete refit of bathroom. Removal of old suite and installation of shower cabinet, toilet and washbasin, and flooring.

Max and Tom were great. Any problems found during the process were resolved speedily. Communication during the work was great and once started, time estimates were kept to. Work was done well and mess kept down to a minimum and cleared up at the end of the job. All in all, very happy with the work.

Bathroom refurbishment

Work was completed to the highest standard. Communication was smooth and we got appointment on a short notice. Gas engineer was very pleasant indeed and he took his time to explain the work required and answer all questions that we had.
We are planning to use this company in the future for any gas work including gas safety recertification.

Back in 2009 Max and his team installed a new kitchen in my flat, along with laying new flooring, and I was very impressed with the quality of the work carried out.

When I was looking at a bigger project this year, including installing a new bathroom, boiler and refreshing the kitchen by spraying the cabinets and installing new worktops appliances, I had no hesitation in asking Max to carry out the work.

The replacement of my conventional boiler with a much more efficient combi-boiler was quite a challenge as it required significant work to re-route the gas pipework, remove the old hot water tanks and pumps, and flush the system. Max was meticulous in the planning of the work and it was clear he took great pride in finding solutions to the problems encountered.

The kitchen has been completely transformed by the spraying of the units and the results were better than I expected with the cabinets looking brand new.
At every stage of the work, Max was very good at communicating progress and discussing the options for dealing with the inevitable issues encountered during work in old flats. During the project I also added on quite a few smaller tasks and all were carried out very professionally.

I would have no hesitation in using Max and his team in the future or recommending him to others.

I got back in touch with Max at A1 recently to renovate my bathroom, to run a check on all my appliances including a combi gas boiler, two living flame gas fires and a gas/electric range cooker.

I contacted Max as he did a full renovation job on my flat around ten years ago. I have been very happy with all the work and it has really stood the test of time. He did a full kitchen renovation then and it still looks great and remains my favourite room.

This time Max really took time to understand what I wanted in the bathroom - which is an awkward space and I wanted underfloor heating, with particular tiling and radiator among my other requests. Max was extremely helpful and took time to explain various options and I am am extremely happy with the end result.

All the appliances mentioned above were checked with the minimum fuss and disruption while I was working from home.

I wouldn't hesitate in recommending Max - he is trustworthy, very good at communicating with you (flexible, responsive etc.) and his work in my experience is always of an excellent standard and a fair price.

We had our kitchen unit doors replaced as the kitchen was quite new, we just didn't like the colour. A1 did a great job. It looks like a new kitchen. Would definitely recommend them.

We had our shower basin and sides taken away and a new shower fitted to deal with a leak to our downstairs neighbours.

After using A1 3 years ago to re-do our entire kitchen and do bits and bobs around the house and they were 5/5. So we went to them again. Communication was great, the use of WhatsApp was very effective for photos. Anita who does the admin is wonderful and easy to communicate with, calling to clarify details. Max came out and checked how things were going several times. They stuck with me when I was slow to respond (which other builders wouldn't do). They arranged the delivery to come to ours, stuck to the date and the timings they promised. They said it would take a week, and the bulk of the work was done in the first 2 days, with just a few small jobs on the Friday and Saturday to finish off. Mariusz who did the actual work came punctually, worked hard and did an excellent job. Top notch.

The only reason it is 4/5 instead of 5/5 for customer service is that there was a hiccup in communication about finishing the job properly. It's because some of our wall fell in creating more work and some flooring issues with the new shower. However, they were quick to respond to our requests, came for a visit and patched it up very well, within the original week promised. They also gave advice about getting other flooring which was very economical. It did result in slightly more to pay which in hindsight I should have anticipated. If you want these guys for a full job (i.e. whole bathroom, whole bedroom, whole kitchen, etc.) then I would give a glowing review - they go over and above what is requested and deal with any surprise costs within the quote. If its for a smaller job that has a specific quote with no room for surprise costs, I'd go with them again but just be very clear to go over all the specifics and details in advance and possibly write down verbal agreements. Excellent work and if you are assertive about what you want in smaller jobs, you can't go wrong with A1.

A1 did a lot of work for us. First they redid our bathroom. Put in new tiles and tub and toilet. All excellent. The tiling is superb. Then we had our kitchen (which is in a box room) opened up into the living room. Making it an open plan. This was by far the biggest job we had with A1and we were happy with everything they did. They also put in new floors throughout our flat. I also asked max to create a built in wardrobe in our bedroom closet (to maximise space) and he drew up plans and created a closet with both A hanging rail And storage shelves. I can’t fault this business. Max is very professional and thoughtful. He took the time to communicate with us and keep us in the loop during the pandemic. We highly recommend this business.

I wanted to recommend Jack and Max with their team who were professional from start to finish. Always someone to answer any queries whether by phone or email. They restored my house with lots of individual touches. I was extremely happy with the workmanship done by this company, quality of work was excellent. Earlier this year, which coincided with the start of Covid 19, A1 Group undertook a major refurbishment work in my house including structural and joinery work, plumbing, electrics and decorating. At first, I was impressed with a very detailed quote. Later on it turned out, not only the quote was excellent - their overall service was great.
The works were well planned and done according to schedule. The operatives were very knowledgeable, skilled and clean. The house was spotless upon the project completion. I had upgrading work done in a utility cupboard after removal of old central heating boiler and water tanks. The space had not been touched for several decades and required a lot of remedial work to make it re-usable. The work of several trades was done very efficiently - and very quickly. Very pleased with the result.

A1 undertook an extensive remodelling of our house and to start with, the planning stage and initial steel work were professionally and flexibly done.
Oh that that would have continue because progress slowed dramatically as did the quality of the work.
There were issues the joinery, plumbing, electrical and decorating work and things went so badly wrong and we got other trades people to finish the work.
For example, it took them 3 attempts to build a simple flight of stairs, there is not a straight wall in the part of the house they built- making the finishing joinery incredibly difficult.
We continue to have problems with the heating and waste pipework- apart from hearing every last drop of water as it flows through the house, we have had to deal with regular leaks in the hot water system. The lime plastering finish is extremely poor despite multiple attempts. We spent good money on triple glazed windows, we shouldn’t have bothered as the building and joinery work around the door frames was so poor insect have until recently been able to find their way in.

The downlighters are not in straight lines and they drilled over a dozen extra holes looking for the electrical cables when trying to find them. The list goes on and on.

Now, we made a bad mistake by trying to live in the house during the work and this led to additional stress. Neither was I a perfect client, but this was down to the glacial rate of progress, poor quality work and mounting bills. Max and Jack, know what they are doing to an extent, but the builders left to do the work made mistake after mistake to the point where the relationship broke down and we negotiated a messy releases. This went on long after we discussed and discussed the problems
Overall our experience was of poor work, painfully slow progress and a lasting legacy of issues that will take time and more money to sort out.

I would strongly urge you to think about the high cost of low prices.

A fantastic service from the initial enquiry through to completion of the works. A1 offered great advice from the outset and were very professional. The work was delivered with great care and to a very high standard of workmanship. We are delighted with the end result. Spraying the kitchen units has been great value for money; the work has transformed the room at a fraction of the cost of replacing in full, or changing the doors. The level of cleanliness when the job was complete is also to be commended.

Jack and the team worked with us on a major renovation project on an old house. There will always be unforeseen issues to deal with in a job of this nature and I don't think there's a building firm on the planet for whom everything is perfect first time every time.

If there were issues Jack and the team always dealt with them promptly. Their work was generally to a very high standard and some of it was exceptional. They were very conscientious about mess and clearing up which was appreciated.

We got through to a great end result and are very happy in our home. I also came to the end of the project trusting Jack which is essential given that any big renovation project like this will require give and take on both sides.

We have used A1 Joinery & Building for a variety of work over several years. This has mostly been repair work to residential dwellings in connection with insurance claims, where the timing of work and the sensitivity of working around clients who are often still in residence, is extremely important. I have had 2 bathrooms totally refurbished. I had my hall replastered and decorated over 3 storeys. I had an external spiral staircase ordered and installed. I have had a number of smaller jobs completed.

The tradesmen who were sent were very hard working and thorough.
