No pushy salespeople: the promise RMC wanted somebody else to vouch for

Ask a homeowner what they expect from a double glazing company and a fair number will describe a visit they would rather not repeat: a long sales pitch, a price that fell every time they said no, and a quote that expired at the front door. RMC Double Glazing has been doing the opposite in Ayr since 1999: a fair price quoted once, no pressure to sign, and customers who come back and recommend them.

The company is family owned and has been trading since 1999, working for domestic customers and other trades across Scotland from a base at Newton Trading Estate in Ayr. Raymond McCutcheon runs it, and most of the work arrives by recommendation, which is a useful discipline: a firm that lives on referrals cannot afford a single bad afternoon in somebody's living room.

RMC will not sell a customer something they do not need. The job is done efficiently and at a sensible price, and the recommendations follow from that.

Old windows, old buildings, and getting the proportions right

Much of Ayrshire is built in red sandstone, and a good deal of it is old enough that the windows were designed before anyone had heard of a thermal break. Replacing them is not a matter of measuring a hole. Get the sightlines wrong and a handsome building looks subtly wrong from the street ever afterwards, in a way most people cannot name but everyone notices.

Vertical sliding sash and case is the answer to that, and it is a good part of what RMC does: modern, sealed, secure and warm, in a frame that keeps the pattern of glazing bars the building was drawn with. The householder gets the ordinary gain, a warmer house and a lower bill, and the building keeps the character it was built with.

It is also the sort of work that rewards a firm that repairs as well as replaces. A window that needs a hinge, a lock or a sealed unit is not a sale, and quoting for one honestly is a good part of how a company ends up living on recommendation.

The part the customer sees every day

From the inside the job is judged differently. Nobody stands in their own front room admiring a thermal rating. They look out of the window.

Which is worth remembering along a coast where a good many houses look out over the Firth of Clyde. A bay window is the best thing in the room, and replacing one is a job where the finish, the sightline and the glass all have to be right, because the customer will be looking straight at the result every morning for the next twenty years.

RMC joined the scheme in 2017 for the customer rather than the marketing. The firm takes care of the people it works for, and membership gave those customers something solid to point at: a business checked by Trading Standards before it ever knocked on a door.

What the membership stands behind is the whole offer: a fair price, no pushy salespeople, quality goods and a quality installation, a guarantee, and a company that is still there afterwards if something needs putting right.

South Ayrshire Trusted Trader is run in partnership with South Ayrshire Council Trading Standards. Before a business is accepted, Trading Standards check the business and the people who own it: complaints history, insurances, Companies House records, the disqualified directors register, advertising and terms of business. Raymond found the process straightforward enough.

What Trading Standards do not do is inspect anybody's workmanship or stand behind the guarantee. The council checks the business is who it says it is and has behaved properly. The customers, in the reviews, say what the work was like.

115 reviews, and not a bad one among them

The profile carries 115 reviews at an average of 5.0 out of 5. A five point zero is rare, and it is rarer still across that many reviews, because a single poor job pulls it down and it never fully recovers.

RMC took the highest number of positive reviews on the South Ayrshire site in 2025, and enquiries through the platform have picked up since. A change in the way customers are invited to leave a review has brought more of them in.

The membership is used rather than filed. The Trusted Trader logo is on the website and appears in the company's social media posts, and it has been pinned to the top of the RMC Instagram account, which for a firm whose vans look like these is not a bad place for it.
